Portal Archives

The portal archives view presents scaffolds that display database records that are created when certain captive portal end-user events occur.

Login Sessions

The login sessions scaffold enables the operator to view a log of all the login sessions that have expired.

The login and logout fields contain the timestamps for when the login session was initiated and when it expired.

The username field stores the login of the user that initiated the login session.

The IP and MAC fields store the IP address and MAC address of the machine from which the end-user logged in.

The online , U/L and D/L fields stores the utilization of the end-user during this login session. Note that these values only account for what is used during this single login session. In environments where accounts are created and automatic login is enabled, end-users may create more than one login sessions over the period of time during which they have Internet access.

The reason field stores information regarding the cause of login session termination. This field helps the operator understand why a login session ends. The following reasons are considered normal termination of login sessions in a zero operator intervention environment:

User-RequestThe end-user clicked on the logout or end session link in their browser when surfing the rXg captive portal.Session-TimeoutThe session reached the maximum allowed time. For example, if the end-user purchased a 3 day plan, the 3 days have elapsed and thus the rXg automatically deleted the end-user session. Another example would be where the end-user is logged in via shared credential group that sets a 1 hour session time limit and 1 hour has elapsed.Quota-ExceededThe end-user device has consumed all of the available quota in the session. For example, if the end-user purchased a 5 GB quota plan and more than 5 GB have been transferred. Another example, the end-user is logged in via a shared credential group that sets a 256 MB maximum transfer and the end-user device transfers more than 256 MB of data.Sessions-ExceededThe end-user exceeded the configured maximum number of login sessions.Recurring-BillThe account has recurring billing enabled and the recurrence interval has been met. For example, if the account is set to monthly recurring billing and 1 month has elapsed since the account was first used. Idle-TimeoutThe end-user device has been idle (no traffic to or from the IP) for at least the amount of time that is configured in the idle timeout setting of the corresponding landing portal.Account-IP-Changed/Device-IP-ChangedThe account or device has come onto the network with a different IP address. This may happen if the DHCP lease for the end-user device has expired and the DHCP server issues a new lease with a different IP address.IP-ReclaimedA different end-user has come onto the network with the IP address associated with this login session and end-user. This may happen if the end-user device leaves the network and the rXg DHCP server assigns the IP address to a different end-user device. The following reasons may be encountered in the login session log during normal rXg operation and are a result of direct operator action: Admin-ResetThe operator manually deleted the login session using the Instruments :: Sessions view.Account-SuspendedThe operator manually deactivated the account by editing the account record. The following reasons are generally indicative of a misconfiguration or of malicious activity on the network: MAC-MismatchThe MAC address of a logged in session changed. This may occur if an end-user or other party deliberately attempts to steal a login session using a second device. For example, if the end-user logs in via a laptop, then shuts down their laptop and statically configures their phone to use the same IP address in an attempt to obtain Internet access for their phone without buying a plan. MAC-Mismatches may also result if the MAC <=> IP mapping network option is set incorrectly or if there is a conflict between the DHCP lease table and the ARP table when both the DHCP lease table and ARP table are both being considered for the MAC <=> IP mapping.

Survey Results

The rXg captive portal includes an end-user survey capability that allows operators to collect arbitrary data from end-users. The results from the end-user surveys are collected and stored in the rXg database. The operator accesses the collected survey data through the survey results scaffold.

The submitted field stores the time stamp of when the survey was collected. This is typically concurrent with the a login event.

The account , shared credential , RADIUS and LDAP fields store the login information that was provided when the survey was submitted. Exactly one of these fields should be populated as it is not possible to login with two sets of credentials.

The session field stores a reference to the IP session that was created when the login was processed.

The answers field stores the questions and answers that the were part of the survey taken and submitted by the end-user. Clicking on the list of answers opens a nested scaffold that displays questions and answers in a tabular format.

Redeemed Coupons

The redeemed coupons scaffold is an archive of all coupons that have been redeemed by end-users.

Coupons are redeemed via the captive portal web application. A successful coupon redemption results in the account being given the credit or access to the usage plan specified in the coupon. In addition, the redeemed coupon is removed from the pool of available coupons and an entry made into the redeemed coupons scaffold.

The redeemed field is the timestamp recorded when the coupon redemption.

The code , batch , credit , usage plan and expires fields contain copies of the data from the coupon that was redeemed.

The account field stores the login of the end-user that redeemed the coupon.

The same coupon code made be present multiple times in the redeemed coupon archive. Once a coupon is redeemed, the code is available and may be chosen by the coupon generator. Thus the same code may be allocated to different coupons at different times. The only stipulation is that the same code is never used for two active coupons at the same time.

The list in redeemed coupons combined with the list of coupons does not represent the set of all coupons that were ever present on the rXg. Coupons that are manually deleted by administrators as well as those that are automatically deleted by the rXg coupon expiration mechanism are not tracked.
